FlexEnergy was proud to attend the third annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit this week in Washington, DC. During the event, former President Bill Clinton provided a keynote that highlighted several policy areas, including the importance of methane-to-energy projects, such as those offered by FlexEnergy. As explained in GreenTech Media’s summary of the speech:

[Clinton] noted that there was no reason the U.S. shouldn’t have a federal finance model for capturing GHG from landfills and agricultural waste. A successful model could also be an example for the rest of the world. Unlike transmission, Clinton did not offer an example of what that might look like, especially with low natural gas prices. One firm that was at ARPA-E, FlexEnergy, can work with low-quality methane making the payback potentially achievable for municipalities with landfill gas that is currently being flared. The technology, however, is still young and is in pilots.

In Orange County, the FlexEnergy system of eight powerstations is expected to pay for itself in five to six years based on the revenue from the gas, and how much will be saved in fees to monitor and maintain the flare that currently burns the methane at the landfill. Theoretically, a federal policy that regulated the treatment of landfill gas could help scale methane capture and processing technologies.

Mike Levin, Vice President of Government Affairs, Participates in Panel Discussion on the New Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

IRVINE, Calif., February 24, 2012 – FlexEnergy Inc (www.flexenergy.com), a company that transforms a range of gases into a clean energy source, participated in a panel discussion titled “California’s New Program for Helping Companies Generate Clean Local Energy: The New Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) and How Your Company Can Use It.” Mike Levin, vice president on Government Affairs, spoke at the event, demonstrating the number of ways businesses can take advantage of the new SGIP. The event was hosted by the Clean Coalition Panel and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

The event comes in response to recent additions made to the SGIP by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The new changes allow businesses to install distributed generation technologies at a discounted rate. The program is intended to reduce peak demands, help customers realize power and costs savings, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California. SGIP is best suited for distributed generation systems that can convert natural gas or biogas into energy or heat for on-site use. Systems like FlexEnergy’s MT250 turbine technology, which has already been installed in around 70 locations across California.

“We see distributed generation as a key part of America’s energy future,” said Mike Levin. “The SGIP is a great program that will ultimately help businesses achieve greater energy efficiency and help California cut down on its emissions.”

Industrial, commercial, and government facilities with a source of natural gas or methane qualify to take advantage of the SGIP. Those that participate in the program can receive up to 60 percent of the overall project cost in financial incentives.

Irvine, Calif., January 30, 2012 –

Today FlexEnergy Inc (www.flexenergy.com), a technology company that designs and manufactures innovative systems capable of producing continuous clean energy from a broad range of sources, announced its selection by an east coast, investor-owned electric and gas utility, to transform the waste gas produced liquefied natural gas facility into an energy-efficient source of electricity, heat and hot water. Four of the company’s Flex Turbine™ MT250s have been shipped as part of the client’s organization-wide environmental initiatives.

The project reduces the liquid natural gas processing plant’s environmental footprint, increase efficiency by using waste gas and generate savings that will positively affect the company’s bottom line.

The FlexEnergy system will generate one megawatt per hour of continuous clean baseload power while also producing heat for LNG facility operations. Surplus power that is not used onsite will be passed on to the electricity grid.

“We are committed to helping our customers meet and exceed their energy-efficiency goals,” said Joseph Perry, CEO of FlexEnergy Inc. “The Flex Turbines will allow NSTAR to comply with regulations, reduce its carbon footprint and generate clean baseload energy to power its processing plant without drawing from the grid.”

The Flex Turbine™ MT250s will be manufactured in FlexEnergy’s nearby Portsmouth, N.H. facilities. The systems are expected to begin generating onsite energy in early 2012.

http://www.ocmetro.com/t-Flex-Energy-methane-fuel-project-Santiago-Canyon-landfill-1-11-12.aspx

The Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an agreement to turn the decommissioned Santiago Canyon landfill in Orange into a source of renewable energy that will provide methane-based power to local homes. The agreement allows Irvine-based Flex OC Renewables, a subsidiary of FlexEnergy Inc., to move forward with its plans to build a power station fueled by methane produced by decomposing trash in the landfill.

Since the landfill closed in 1988, the garbage has burned off the methane released by its decomposition, releasing the pollutant into the atmosphere. The Santiago Canyon project will progress Orange County’s adaptation to new air quality standards for waste gas emissions, which will take effect in 2013.

The project, which will be completed later this year, will supply an estimated 1.5 to 2 megawatts of power, enough to power 1,500 to 2,000 homes.

The environmentally sophisticated project will use Flex Powerstation FP250 turbines to destroy the methane and produce energy. The turbines will transform the gas from an air pollutant into a source of clean energy, operating at a temperature that will prevent the creation of harmful elements such as nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

“By installing the Flex Powerstation FP250 power generation system, we will be able to beneficially reuse landfill gas to generate a source of revenue and renewable energy,” said FlexEnergy CEO Joseph Perry. “We expect Santiago Canyon to become a showcase facility that will enable Orange County to continue its leadership in clean technology, create jobs, improve our environment and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

FlexEnergy Fills Up With $18M Convertible Debt Round For Growth

By Yuliya Chernova
06 January 2012

FlexEnergy has a long to-do list for this year, as it answers to the growing interest from diverse customers like oil and gas companies, office buildings, and landfills, for its low-emissions micro-turbines. To that end, the company just raised an $18 million convertible debt round, VentureWire has learned.

“The investment is being made to assist us as we expand manufacturing and sales and marketing throughout the country,” said Joseph Perry, chief executive of the Irvine, Calif.-based company.

The company closed a $13 million round in early December from previous investors SAIL Capital and RNS Capital, and a $5 million follow-on more recently from SAIL’s sister fund Louisiana Sustainability Fund, Perry said.

In 2011, the company pulled in just shy of $9 million in revenue, Perry said, in its first year of commercial sales. Already it has an $8 million new order from an Orange County landfill that wants eight FlexEnergy systems that take methane emitted by the landfill, and convert it into electricity in a cheap, efficient, and state-subsidized way.

Still, the company is a couple of years away from profitability, said Perry.

The company’s growing demand comes from different sources. Office buildings, said Perry, can take advantage of the low natural gas prices to use natural gas for electricity generation with FlexEnergy’s micro-turbines, and reduce their electric utility bills.

Oil and gas companies, meanwhile, can use the transportable FlexEnergy systems on oil platforms and substitute the expensive diesel power there, or at hydraulic fracturing sites, that are often far from energy sources. FlexEnergy is shipping three of its systems to BP PLC now, said Perry.

FlexEnergy’s technology relies on a slow-combustion process inside metal cylinders. “That large steel vessel can be manufactured in Louisiana,” said Perry. The company is negotiating with state manufacturers who would supply the components for FlexEnergy’s systems. That would satisfy the mission of recently launched Louisiana Sustainability Fund that invests in later-stage companies that have both sustainable technologies and business in the state.

SAIL Sustainable Partners LLC is the general partner of the Louisiana fund and an affiliate of SAIL Capital Partners.

FlexEnergy is working on raising a Series C round of funding later this year from strategic investors, according to Walter Schindler, a FlexEnergy director and managing partner at SAIL Capital. That fund raising is being managed by investment bankers at Citigroup Inc., said Schindler.
